Three New CD Reviews by NY Artists

New NYC CD Reviews

Los Hermanos Colón, Rolando Morales-Matos, Gerardo Contino

NYC has been a hotbed for virtually all forms of music from Latin America as well as Afro-Latin music indigenous to the US as well. These three new recordings represent just that, different yet equally significant perspectives of Latin influenced music right here in New York City.

Sabor Colón (Los Hermanos Colón): This 2014 release employs all the tried and true formulas that have made New York salsa great since the beginning, proving once again that one can’t go wrong with concise arrangements and A-list musicians. Each part fits together like a well-designed piece of architecture with every detail accounted for and nothing left out of place. You can read the review here.

Forward (Rolando Morales-Matos): Vibraphonist/multi-instrumentalist Rolando Morales-Matos is the embodiment of what people would picture of a consummate professional musician. His eponymous solo effort, featuring his own ensemble Forward, is a top notch Latin jazz album with intriguing compositions/arrangements and fiery improvisations by Matos and his superb roster of musicians.  You can read the review here.

Somos Latinos (Gerardo Contino): Former NG La Banda vocalist Gerardo Contino brings his band of A-list musicians into the studio to create his first solo album. The result is an explosive Timba paragon with state of the art instrumental work throughout. You can read the review here.

Rest in Peace - Armando Peraza (1924-2014)

We've lost one of the all-time greats. Master percussionist Armando Peraza played with Machito, Pérez Prado, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente, George Shearing, Carlos Santana and many others during his 89 years. He lived in the Bay Area for the last 40 years and in addition to being a genius, he was a wonderful guy who offered support and inspiration to everyone around him. He'll be sorely missed.

The 13th Annual Chicago International Salsa Congress - Mostly NOT Unlucky

Article by Bill Tilford, all rights reserved

So, we are looking at the 13th anniversary of an event that is also starting on the 13th day of the month (fortunately, not a Friday), and this might have sent many persons scrambling for their rabbit's foot or other special charms, but most of the Chicago International Salsa Congress was superb (we'll get to the exceptions a little later).  Click continue reading for more.
