Pepito in Oakland - Friday Night

with Carlos Caro and Jesús Díaz

Pupy alumnus Pepito Gómez makes his third trip to the Bay Area tomorrow (Friday) night at Club Antón, right around the corner from Yoshi's in Oakland's Jack London Square district.

Pepito not only sang with Pupy, but wrote some of his best songs, including Un poquito al revés, containing the title coro of Pupy's epic Tranquilo que yo controlo, one of the best albums of recent years. As always, the lovely and talented Ariacne Trujillo will be the pianist and musical director and  this time the rhythm section will consist of Bay Area monsters Carlos Caro and Jesús Díaz. Between sets, it will be Walt Digz, a fabulous timba DJ who always embarrasses me by playing some absolutely brilliant track that I haven't heard, forcing me to sheepishly ask what it is. Let's try to sell this thing out so we can keep shows like this coming! Click here for advance tickets.

CORRECTION:

Revé & Charanga CANCELLED only in SF

Alll right - this is getting really ridiculous, but I do have some tentative good news for a change. It turns out that only the San Francisco parts of the Revé and Charanga Habana tours have been cancelled/

Currently Confirmed Charanga Habanera dates

Currently Confirmed Revé dates

ADDITIONALLY:

Sportsmen's Lodge in Los Angeles is advertising Charanga Habanera for May 7

From this point I will only report concerts in the United States as being "advertised".

Latest California Shakeups

No Charanga - Trabuco Venue Change

It's really frustrating to be a timba fan in California ...

Here's the latest:

1) No Charanga Habanera - May 7 in LA (Sportsmen's Lodge) and May 8 in SF (Cócomo) are both cancelled.

2) Manolito y su Trabuco - who have their visas in hand will play BOTH of those gigs. If you have tickets, you can either use them to see Trabuco or get a refund at the point of purchase.

3) Yoshi's has cancelled Manolito for May 5 and May 6

On a more positive note I strongly agree with Michelle on those Revé tracks - the rhythm section sounds measurably hotter than Fresquecito, which was easily one of the best albums of the 2000s.

Also, the Ned Sublette Lecture at MoAD in SF is still on for Thursday night, April 29.

Bellingham Tonight

Seattle Tomorrow - SF Monday & Wed (new show!) - LA Thursday

Last night produced another torrid show from Salsa Mayor - this time at SF Cócomo. We'll have scads of great photos from Peter Maiden and Tom Ehrlich soon. Those crazy enough to go to both shows reported that Aragón at Yoshi's Oakland was nearly sold out and had absolutely exquisite, tear-inducingly beautiful sound. No such claims were made about Cócomo's sound system, but Oakland's trickles of nostalgic tears were countered by a raging river of testoserone across the Bay. Aragón continues tonight and tomorrow. Meanwhile Salsa Mayor heads to Bellingham tonight and Seattle  Sunday, then back to SF Monday night for a clinic and a new show added Wednesday Night at Oakland's House of Music, and then on to The Reef  in Long Beach (Los Angeles) Thursday.
