ENGLISH: Cubadisco 2013 Grand Prize winner and Latin GRAMMY nominee (also 2013) Miriam Ramos will be performing at the Miami Dade County Auditorium on January 18 and 19,   Also performing in this concert will be pianist Ulises Hernández.   Miriam will be singing selections from her award-winning trilogy La Canción Cubana (you can read our review here) and will be accompanied by an excellent pianist from that project, Rolando Luna. ENGLISH: On January 23, Cuban Jazz clarinet wizard and composer Ernesto Vega will be performing at the VIP Preview for the Trinity Jazz Festival in Houston,Texas. His debut release Venir al Mundo won Cubadisco awards for Jazz and Design in 2009 along with being nominated in the Ópera Prima (Best New Artist) and Liner Notes categories.   (You can read our review here.)  Ernesto recently performed at special event at the JEN (Jazz Education Network) conference in Dallas,  and we expect to see and hear a lot more about him in the future, especially since he is expected to release a new recording with Harold López-Nussa later this year.  For more information, see the Trinity Jazz Festival website.

ENGLISH: In December 2013, Mezcla unveiled a new  DVD of a live performance that included many of the best Jazz artists in Havana.   You might not be able to obtain a copy of this yet, but watch for it - it is phenomenal, and you can read our review here.    Incidentally, Mezcla is also in the process of finalizing a CD of last year's live performance at Yoshi's and has plans to tour the US again later this year.   

ESPAÑOL:  En diciembre de 2013, Mezcla reveló un nuevo DVD de un concierto en vivo que incluía muchos de los mejores artistas de Jazz en La Habana.  Puede que no sea capaz de obtener una copia de esto todavía, pero mantenga los ojos abiertos  - es fenomenal, y puede leer nuestra reseña aquí. Por cierto, Mezcla también está en el proceso de finalización de un CD del concierto en vivo en Yoshi's en 2013 y tiene planes de montar una gira por EE.UU. de nuevo a finales de este año. 

ENGLISH: Omar Sosa just released a new solo piano CD, Senses. This is a very contemplative recording, and you can read our review here.   It isn't classical music but may appeal to listeners who enjoy that genre as well.  Omar has also been performing live with an aggregation called The New AfroCuban Quartet, which includes Childo Tomas, Ernesto Simpson and Leandro Saint-Hill.   A studio recording is expected in the next several months. 

ESPAÑOL: Omar Sosa  acaba de lanzar un nuevo CD de piano solo, Senses.   Es un fonograma muy contemplativa, y puede leer nuestra reseña aquí. No es la música clásica, pero puede apelar a los oyentes que disfrutan de ese género también. Además, Omar ha estado tocando en vivo con una agregación llamada The New AfroCuban Quartet, que incluye Childo Tomas, Ernesto Simpson y Leandro Saint-Hill.  Una grabación en el estudio se espera en los próximos meses. 

New reviews:   More than a dozen new CD and DVD reviews of Cuban recordings have been published this month in our Reviews section this month with more to come.   These include traditional, Jazz and Timba recordings.

Miami: Interactivo in concert, Miami Dade County Auditorium, 29th and Flagler Street, Miami FL, March 8, 9PM

This should be one of the concerts of the year in the United States. Interactivo is one of the most progressive and interesting bands in Cuba today; it combines everytthing from Jazz to Hip Hop to modern Cuban dance music, and the most recent information released adds several members of Habana Abierta to the roster along with Gema Corredera, Mayito Rivera and David Torrens. Telmary is also on the roster. We'll post some video of Interactivo closer to the date, but with the additional stars in the show, there are bound to be some musical surprises as well.

ENGLISH:  March 31, 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of EGREM, the home of the record label that first brought us Timba and many other forms of modern Cuban music. EGREM began the festivities on February 28th with a press conference to announce its plans for the occasion.   A photo gallery from the conference is available here. 
With the assistance of several individuals at EGREM, Bill Tilford has established a special section for EGREM and its activities, which is availaible here. 
All who love modern Cuban music have much to celebrate. 

ESPAÑOL: 31 de marzo 2014 marca el 50 º aniversario del establecimiento de la EGREM, la casa discográfica que nos traía la TImba y muchas otras formas de la música cubana moderna. EGREM comenzó los festejos del 28 de febrero con una conferencia de prensa para anunciar sus planes para la ocasión.  Una galería de fotos de la conferencia está disponible aquí.
Con la ayuda de varias personas de la EGREM, Bill Tilford ha establecido una sección especial sobre la EGREM y sus actividades, que está disponible aquí.
