ENGLISH: The 2019 Festival de la Salsa en Cuba begins today with a dinner and concerts by Yasser Ramos y el Tumbao Mayombe and Yumurí y sus Hermanos. Last night there was a pre-gala warm up at Casa de la Música Miramar with concerts by Ivan el Hijo de Teresa, Maikel Dinza and Maykel Blanco y Su Salsa Mayor.

If - like me - you couldn't attend this year, you can still keep up with what's going on through social media. The official Facebook page of the Festival de la Salsa en Cuba will be uploading photos and videos from the events. I also know that there are at least two excellent timba photographers  in Havana right now, so we can live vicariously through their uploads. Luis Angel Gonzales Taipe has even said that he will be uploading pictures live during the concerts! And you may know Nathanaël Mergui's work including his Los Van Van documentary. ESPAÑOL: El Festival de la Salsa en Cuba 2019 comienza hoy con una cena y conciertos de Yasser Ramos y su Tumbao Mayombe y Yumurí y sus Hermanos. Anoche hubo un calentamiento pre-gala en Casa de la Música Miramar con conciertos de Ivan el Hijo de Teresa, Maikel Dinza y Maykel Blanco y Su Salsa Mayor.

Si, como yo, no pudiste asistir este año, todavía puedes mantenerte al día con lo que está pasando a través de las redes sociales. La página oficial de Facebook del Festival de la Salsa en Cuba subirá fotos y videos de los eventos. También sé que hay al menos dos excelentes fotógrafos de timba que están en La Habana en este momento, por los que podemos vivir indirectamente a través de sus subidas. ¡Luis Angel Gonzales Taipe incluso ha dicho que cargará fotos en vivo durante los conciertos! Y es posible que ya conozcas el trabajo de Nathanaël Mergui, incluido su documental sobre Los Van Van.

ENGLISH:  The XVIII Edition of the  Fiesta del Tambor will take place from March 10-14 in Havana Cuba.  The country of honor this year is Spain, and a number of excellent Spanish artists including Diego el Cigala and one of my personal favorites, Patax, will be among the performers.   Fiesta del Tambor is a combination of percussion contests, dance instructions and concerts that include Cuba's best percussionists and their ensembles.  We will be in attendance at  this event for the first time this year.  You can learn much more about the event and the performers at  http://www.fiestadeltambor.cult.cu/

ESPAÑOL: La XVIII Edición de la Fiesta del Tambor tendrá lugar del 10 al 14 de marzo en La Habana Cuba. El país de honor de este año es España, y varios artistas españoles excelentes, entre ellos Diego el Cigala y uno de mis favoritos personales, Patax, estarán entre los artistas. Fiesta del Tambor es una combinación de concursos de percusión, instrucciones de danza y conciertos que incluyen a los mejores percusionistas de Cuba y sus ensembles. ENGLISH:   This year, nearly all of the GRAMMY winners  were announced during the afternoon webcast on the GRAMMY.com webiste.   Although Tropical Latin  and Latin Jazz live performances were not presented in the telecast, the overall quality of the music that WAS presented (including some excellent World Music) was quite good.  For music industry professionals, the afternoon webcast, rather than the later telecast, has become THE show to watch regardless of genre.  
Congratulations to the Dafnis Prieto Big Band for winning the Best Latin Jazz Album category.  Even our perennial Jazz curmudgeon, Bill Tilford, agrees with the outcome this year, and you can read our review of the album here. 
ESPAÑOL: Este año, casi todos los ganadores de los premios GRAMMY se anunciaron durante el webcast por la tarde en el sitio web de GRAMMY.com. Si bien ningunas presentaciones en vivo de Tropical Latin y Latin Jazz se presentaron en el webcast , la calidad general de la música que se presentó (incluyendo algunos excelentes World Music) fue bastante buena. Para los profesionales de la industria de la música, el webcast por la tarde, en lugar de la transmisión televisa posterior, se ha convertido en EL espectáculo para ver independientemente del género. Felicidades al Dafnis Prieto Big Band (Back to the Sunset) por ganar la categoría de Mejor Álbum de Jazz Latino.  Incluso nuestro cascarrabias de Jazz perenne, Bill Tilford, está de acuerdo con el resultado de este año, y puede leer nuestra reseña del álbum aquí.  

ENGLISH: Also, in the GRAMMY awards, even a nomination is a special achievement.  Congratulations to The Spanish Harlem Orchestra (Anniversary) for winning the Best Tropical Latin Album Category, but we salute Formell & Los Van Van (Legado) as well as Orquesta Akokán for their nominations in that category.  You can read our review of Los Van Van's album Legado here.
