Concert Report - 2006 West Coast Tour - Felipe Lamoglia
Saxophonist-musical director Felipe Lamoglia is a master arranger of the calibre of Juan Ceruto -- perfectly framing each classic pop hook and then tastefully painting the canvas with his own original jazz-influenced harmonies and melodic ideas. His sax playing is also sublime and full of surprises. On Sunday night, he added a subtle instrumental tag at the end of Manolín's Es que me la lleva that was absolutely gorgeous.
Felipe Lamoglia (sax) & Braily Ramos (trombone)
And the classic pop hooks which Lamoglia frames so well are everywhere -- from the prolific pen of Braily Ramos (Mi verdad, Más), who has become one of the best Cuban cuerpo writers, from el Médico himself, el dueño de los hooks, from Angél Pututi (Muchacha), from singer Adonis Puentes' brother Alexis (Pintura), and from the great coros, guías and bloques that have begun to emerge from the band's collective psyche as it continues to play and rehearse together. When they were here in February they had to stretch their material more than they wanted to fill two sets -- but now they play tight, urgent versions of each song and still can't find time to squeeze them all in. I had to wait until the encore of the last night to hear Tomasito & Reinier's electrifying guaguancó interplay on the band's definitive remake of the NG classic Los sitios enteros.
