ENGLISH: The Festival de la Salsa en Cuba is in full swing. Last night the Los Van Van concert was cancelled due to rain, but they will perform tonight from 1:20am to 2:30. What a fantastic line-up! If you want to keep up with each day of the festival, you can follow their official facebook page. I also highly recommend following the page of Nathanaël Mergui Photographe, who is posting stunning photos everyday from the festival as well as pictures the city of Havana and her people.

Anoche, el concierto de Los Van Van se canceló debido a la lluvia, pero actuarán esta noche de 1:20 a.m. a 2:30 p.m. ¡Qué alineación tan fantástica! ENGLISH: The 2020 Havana and Rhythm Festival Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam will take place from March 23-29th in various venues in Havana. This year's theme is "Africa, Mother of all Rhythms" and includes a workshop  in African Djembe by Weedie Braimah (Ghana) and a masters class in African Rhythms: Dances of Guinea and Mali by Prof. Talise Campbell (Guinea). As always the Fiesta del Tambor will conduct competitions in percussion as well as dance. There is still time for international dancers to sign up to compete. "International couples or contestants must register by email and review the conditions established such as, registration fee for foreigners, payment methods, among other information before March 14, 2020, which will be available on the festival's websites ..."

ENGLISH: Yes, I know, a lot of authorities want you to stay indoors right now, but this is a rare opportunity to see Alaín Pérez live in the United States.  His resume is massive - his own bands, Habana Abierta, Jerry González in Spain, Paco de Lucia to name but a few - and in addition to being an excellent bassist, vocalist and bandleader he is also a supremely entertaining showman.  Since returning to Cuba from Spain a few years ago, he has been setting concert halls on fire there, and he will be in a setting in the United States where the concert will be produced well.  He will be backed by the Julio Montalvo Orchestra. If you are withing driving distance of Miami, you should see this. 
Jorge Luis Pacheco is an excellent pianist and is also very much worth seeing.  He has the mixed blessing of coming from an island that has produced so many but also does excellent shows.

ESPAÑOL: Sí, lo sé, muchas autoridades quieren que se quede en casa ahora mismo, pero es una rara oportunidad de ver a Alaín Pérez en vivo en los Estados Unidos. Su currículum es enorme: sus propias bandas, Habana Abierta, Jerry González en España, Paco de Lucía, por nombrar solo algunas, y además de ser un excelente bajista, vocalista y director de bandas, también es un showman sumamente entretenido. Desde que regresó a Cuba desde España hace unos años, ha estado incendiando salas de conciertos allí, y estará en un escenario en los Estados Unidos donde el concierto se producirá bien. Estará respaldado por la Orquesta de Julio Montalvo. Si se encuentra a poca distancia en automóvil de Miami, debería ver esto.
Jorge Luis Pacheco es un excelente pianista y también vale la pena ver. Él tiene la bendición mixta de venir de una isla que ha producido tantos pero también hace excelentes espectáculos.

ENGLISH: The year 2020 will be remembered for the hashtag #stayathome. While many timberos may be suffering from dance club withdrawal, there are opportunities online to help fill the void. Bill has already posted about some of the streaming concerts being offered. Additionally, timba DJs around the world are putting their turntables to use with shows broadcast on Facebook, such as CuarenTimba. A unique educational opportunity has also arisen. On March 19th, master percussionist and timba legend Calixto Oviedo began a hour-long series called "Hablando de Timba". 

Calixto has an unrivaled knowledge of the rise of timba, having lived it and been part of such groups as Pacho Alonso, Adalberto Álvarez y Su Son and NG La Banda before relocating. Calixto has released three solo CDs "La Recompensa" (timba) and two Latin Jazz albums: "Calixto's Way", and the "Como Suena" with his Cuban Jazz Train. Calixto and our own Kevin Moore worked together on the "Beyond Salsa Percussion" series, volumes 2 and 3.

Calixto is now sharing his experience with us from the comfort of his livingroom, including audio examples. This is a fantastic opportunity to listen and learn, but also to take part in a dialog and ask the questions you've always wanted to ask. This is as valuable for timba newbies as it is for young Cuban musicians who didn't live through the timba of the 90s. You can tune in tomorrow at 12:30pm Pacific Time USA. That's 9:30pm central European time on Calixto's official Facebook page.

Si bien muchos timberos pueden estar sufriendo la retirada del club de baile, hay oportunidades en línea para ayudar a llenar el vacío. Bill ya ha publicado sobre algunos de los conciertos en streaming que se ofrecen. Además, los DJs de timba de todo el mundo están utilizando sus tocadiscos con los programas transmitidos en Facebook, como CuarenTimba. También ha surgido una oportunidad educativa única. El 19 de marzo, el maestro percusionista y leyenda de la timba Calixto Oviedo comenzó una serie de una hora llamada "Hablando de Timba".
